Take a STAND against Osteoporosis Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures, especially of the hip, spine, and wrist. The bad news is that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men, 50 years and older, will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Breaking a bone when you´re older can be very serious. Many times it leads to immobility, and 20% of seniors who break a hip will die within one year. The good news is that osteoporosis is preventable, detectable, and treatable.
