At Barrington Orthopedic Specialists, we offer the most advanced bone density testing that is used to detect the decrease in bone mass associated with osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis, otherwise known as the “brittle bone disease,” causes a weakening of the bones that can ultimately result in fractures. Often the result of a fall or household accident, fractures commonly occur in the hips, spine, wrists, arms, and legs.
The most commonly known risk factors for osteoporosis include:
- Aging females
- Low sex hormones (most common during menopause)
- Low body weight
- Use of specific medications
Prevention and treatment options for osteoporosis include an increase of vitamin D and calcium, maintaining a regular exercise program, and if needed, the use of osteoporosis medications.
A bone density scan, or DEXA, is the only way to accurately diagnose osteoporosis. Once the severity of osteoporosis is determined, the development of a plan to help prevent the onset or the progression of the disease is important.
