Osteoporosis Prevention & Assessment

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue. It leads to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures, especially of the hip, spine, and wrist. Affecting 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men aged 50 years and older, osteoporosis can be very serious, often leading to immobility. Fortunately, osteoporosis is preventable, detectable, and treatable.

What are you doing to protect your bones?

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends following these guidelines for bone health:

  • Consume your daily recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D
  • Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol
  • Talk to your doctor about bone health
  • When appropriate, have a bone density test and take the appropriate medication

It is imperative that patients take action to protect their bone health. At Barrington Orthopedic Specialists, we strive to increase awareness about osteoporosis and educate our patients on prevention and treatment methods through our Take a Stand Against Osteoporosis program.
